Summary

A vivid, evocative YA lesbian romance about how the universe is full of second chances。

Ryann Bird dreams of traveling across the stars。 But a career in space isn’t an option for a girl who lives in a trailer park on the “wrong” side of town。 So Ryann becomes her circumstances and settles for acting out and skipping school to hang out with her delinquent friends。

One day she meets Alexandria: a furious loner who spurns Ryann’s offer of friendship。 After a horrific accident leaves Alexandria with a broken arm, the girls are brought together despite themselves—and Ryann learns her secret: Alexandria’s mother is an astronaut who volunteered for a one-way trip to the edge of the solar system。

Every night without fail, Alexandria waits to catch radio signals from her mother。 And now it’s up to Ryann to lift her onto the roof day after day until the silence between them grows into friendship, and eventually something more。

The Weight of the Stars is the new LGBT young adult romance from K。 Ancrum, written with the same style of short, micro-fiction chapters and immediacy that garnered acclaim for her debut, The Wicker King。

I am so conflicted over how to rate this book。 I almost DNF'd it, but kept going because I've heard so many good things about this book and didn't want to give up。 For literally the first 300 pages, the characters felt flat, Ryann and Alexandria had zero chemistry, and nothing happened。 But wow。 I'm glad I didn't give up。 Y'all, reading this book felt like staring at a pile of wood for hours on end, bored to tears waiting for something to happen, and all of sudden there's glorious flame, and war I am so conflicted over how to rate this book。 I almost DNF'd it, but kept going because I've heard so many good things about this book and didn't want to give up。 For literally the first 300 pages, the characters felt flat, Ryann and Alexandria had zero chemistry, and nothing happened。 But wow。 I'm glad I didn't give up。 Y'all, reading this book felt like staring at a pile of wood for hours on end, bored to tears waiting for something to happen, and all of sudden there's glorious flame, and warmth, and dazzling beauty。 So。。。。I'm gonna go with 4 stars?? 。。。more

While this story is undeniably promising and tender, this book regrettably suffers greatly from its writing in places, whether it be in the questionable character descriptions or the shoddy dialogue。 I've read enough YA books with a ragtag group of troubled teens; if you're gonna serve this up to us again, better do it a little better than this! Apart from Ryann and Alexandria, I didn't really get to know any of these characters as separate entities from the trauma they were carrying around, which made for an extremely one-dimensional friend group。 I could not find myself properly engaged until about a third of the way in, but I must commend Ancrum for setting the scene for a plot so enticing that I did not put it down once after that。 This book feels like a bit of a diamond in the rough that hasn't been polished enough to let its true shine come through。。。 and I truly wish I could've loved it more。Despite my criticisms, I did find myself caring about *some* of the relationships depicted, and about the outcome of the book。 Furthermore, I certainly will not soon be forgetting such iconic lines as "I thought our friendship was a Gays Only friendship。" 。。。more

OMFFFFFFGGGGGGGH this BOOK! SO PURE, SO SCIENCE-Y SO PERFECT!I love when I pick up books having no idea what I'm getting into。 A perfect story of a girl whose mom chose to do the unthinkable, volunteered for a one way trip to the edge of the solar system while another girl, dreams of doing just that, however struggles with school and is honestly, a delinquent to a point (but who isn't a tender teen at one time in their lives)。 This story weaves two people together while exploring my favorite sub OMFFFFFFGGGGGGGH this BOOK! Original, gay, spacey, YA, checks most of my boxes for me!Would I recommend? Not sure, this book probably won't be for everyone due to the YA nature of it, but I'm glad it's a book I gave a chance to。Until Next Time My Friends,-Mr。 Horror 。。。more

To be honest, I knew I wouldn't like this one when a purple-haired kid with torn jeans appeared on the first page。 I hate purple-haired characters。 They're always an indicator of an author trying very hard to be QUIRKY。 I'd really been looking forward to this read。 I was super excited。 Space Lesbians, I was thinking while waiting for my book order。 Space Lesbians !! In the future !!! What I got felt like a Sex Education AU taking place in 2028。 Let me explain。 The two main characters seem to have been inspired by Maeve Wiley (Ryann - the tall, angry, rebellious white punk who lives in a trailer park, is really good at school and kind of a mum friend) and Ola Nyman (Alexandria - the small, short-haired, half black, silently angry and obviously sad girl whose mother is gone) and the tension between them at the end of season 1 and beginning of season 2。 The stars & the universe theme could be inspired by Lily's obsession with aliens and other galaxies。 Because other than this characterisation, there honestly wasn't much in this novel。 The characters don't feel real。 I kept confusing them (especially Blake and Tomas)。 Nothing anyone ever says or does made sense。 The dialogues are awfully stilted。 The adults are completely hysteric (that teacher。。?! and Alexandria's dad, not only giving Ryann a key but getting her name engraved in it。。? WHO DOES THAT。。?!)。 The big love story didn't work for me because there was no chemistry between the two girls, at all, ever。 The plot is so inexistent it adjusts itself to the characters - a super top secret space company has the same IT and security system as 20 years ago ? Really ? Those things get updates all the time。 Could you imagine still using Windows XP at work ? Nothing regarding the space travel-part of the novel seems to have been properly researched。 Sound, for example, or radio signals, take time to travel。 Just like light。 A radio signal from around Jupiter would take roughly 43 minutes to reach Earth。 Coming from Pluto, it would be five and a half years。 Why was that not mentioned, when waiting for radio signals from space is such a big part of the story ? Also, why would anyone agree to go and spend their whole life in space ? To die in space ? And what happens to the bodies of those who freaking die ? Does the crew just keep the corpses of dead crew members on bord ? Are they chucked out ? Are there dead Uninauts orbiting Saturn ? And how did they even take along enough food for 60 years ? And why was civilians being sent to the end of the solar system in 2010 the only futuristic AU element here ? How can everything be the same as in our 2020s if this world had such advanced technology by 2010 ?!Another, minor annoyance : a Sikh character called Ahmed。 Ahmed is a Muslim name。 No Sikh is called Ahmed。 There would have been many beautiful, typically Sikh names to choose from。 Don't do diversity if you're not willing to do a minimum of research。 There's literally a website called sikhnames。com。 The writing is quite frankly bad。 It's repetitive, pseudo-philosophical ("The stars have weight。 And my little life wasn't heavy enough to outweigh your want of it。" - Your want of what now ? "It" would refer to the weight。 Why would anyone want the weight of the stars ?) and "Ryann let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding"。 I was so bored and so annoyed I ended up skimming through the last hundred pages。 What a waste of time and money。 。。。more

This one was a struggle for me, as I'd had it on my TBR list for so long。 On one hand, I wanted to love it so badly。。。 but on the other, I was listening to the audio and finding myself zoning out。 I loved the premise of a girl who wanted to hear her mom, but she was hurtling through space。 This story is less about the universe and more about the connection between two young girls。 While the portrayal of high school was less than realistic, I enjoyed the diversity of characters and the struggles This one was a struggle for me, as I'd had it on my TBR list for so long。 On one hand, I wanted to love it so badly。。。 but on the other, I was listening to the audio and finding myself zoning out。 I loved the premise of a girl who wanted to hear her mom, but she was hurtling through space。 This story is less about the universe and more about the connection between two young girls。 While the portrayal of high school was less than realistic, I enjoyed the diversity of characters and the struggles that they went through。 Plus any book with LGBTQIA+ rep is a win for me。 。。。more

Beautiful and moving prose—that didn’t for a second sounds like highschoolers。 Definitely a heartwarming found family story, but kind of contrived, I couldn’t get behind a lot of the character motivations or decisions or reactions, and I’m sorry, you would absolutely NOT have time to partake in this plot if you were caring for an infant。Don’t get me wrong, I definitely enjoyed reading this, and swooned nicely over the love story, but the above all still annoyed me throughout。

2。5 There were several things I really liked about this book, but to be honest I almost DNF several times。 Positives:I loved the variety of family structures。 I loved the authors note。 I did enjoy the way it ended。 It was really hard for me to get into, I found it had a somewhat disjointed in writing style and left several things unresolved 。

I heard such wonderful things about this book and I was really disappointed。 But I'll start with the things I liked:-The love story wasn't rushed and felt realistic-Most of the interactions between characters/the dialogue felt realistic (with the notable exception of the scene where Ryann and Alexandria profess their love to each other in the most poetic and weirdest way possible)-There was good representation in this book on a lot of frontsNow my two main gripes with the book: it was boring, an I heard such wonderful things about this book and I was really disappointed。 But I'll start with the things I liked:-The love story wasn't rushed and felt realistic-Most of the interactions between characters/the dialogue felt realistic (with the notable exception of the scene where Ryann and Alexandria profess their love to each other in the most poetic and weirdest way possible)-There was good representation in this book on a lot of frontsNow my two main gripes with the book: it was boring, and it didn't make sense。 *Boring: There is not an ounce of forward momentum in this entire book。 Especially in the first half。 Everyone is just hanging out。 Looking at stars。 Doing nothing。 Then, the group decides to put in motion their plot to find more information (though the exact information they're looking for, why it is hidden, why they need it, and why it never occurred to them to just ASK anyone for it, are all completely unclear。) And even still, there is hardly any tension。 There is no suspense or urgency。 It all just kind of works out in an undramatic and highly unbelievable way。 I just didn't understand why this story needed to be a book--there was nothing dramatic about it。 It was very mundane。 The romance was also only a small part of the book and didn't bloom until the VERY end。 So that didn't save it either。*Didn't make sense: The following are things about this book that didn't make sense:-First, there is no way the CPS would allow two high schoolers, neither of whom have jobs or parents, to raise a baby。 And if they did, one of them DEFINITELY would have had to drop out of high school and get a job。 How are they paying for anything?-Was Ryann's initial plan to get Alexandria to befriend her by isolating her because Ryann's friends were being mean to her? That part also made no sense。-Then, the motion of the story is set in place, not because Alexandria stumbles across something that doesn't make sense, or believes her father is hiding something from her, but because someone who doesn't know her father at all, completely randomly, is like, "Have you ever considered your dad is hiding something from you?" And she's like, "I hadn't! But I'll check!" And then just randomly looks around at home and discovers her dad used to work at SCOUT。-WHICH THEN DOESN'T EVEN MATTER。 The fact that he used to intern at SCOUT means nothing to the story and is never brought up again。-The only thing it allows them to do is BREAK IN to SCOUT, a highly secretive private company that hasn't deactivated an intern badge from 20 years ago??? Which somehow Alexandria knew would be the case because she researched which security system they used on the internet??-Then, instead of asking her dad for any additional information (again, WHAT information she's looking for is highly unclear--just general info on her mom) and instead of asking SCOUT for additional information (which, it turns out, they would have been happy to give her), she decides to break in。 -Ok, let's just go with it。 At least breaking in is dramatic right? Wrong。 They break in, and instead of anything even MILDLY dramatic happening, the CEO shows up, conveniently there super late at night, and just tells her everything she wants to know。 -She then proceeds to be SUPER pissed at SCOUT for holding the mission that her mom went on, when at no point did it seem they were holding her mom hostage。 She blames SCOUT, but not her MOM? Who was pregnant and decided to leave her baby behind and go into space? I mean, regardless of whether you think that's a bad move, she is much more culpable than SCOUT。 They didn't FORCE her to go。 And even in her transmissions at the end of the book, mom doesn't seem that cut up to have left her kid behind。 -Then the CEO offers to let Alexandria go up in space, instead of holding the open call they were planning to。 And she gives the opportunity to Ryann。 But why would SCOUT accept Ryann? They made an exception for HER because of her circumstances。 They didn't just put her in charge of choosing someone else。-And THEN, once they decide to accept Ryann for the mission, instead of giving her flying lessons and preparing her, she is forced to go to a random apple conglomerate and beg the CEO of THAT to teach her to FLY? And he says yes and spends hours and hours and hours teaching her to fly because she left him some applesauce made from some apples she stole from him??? WHAT?Literally no part of the plot of this book makes any sense。 And on top of that, it wasn't even interesting or dramatic。 Had high hopes, and it was a let down。 。。。more

Why would the teacher be asking Ryann to help Alexandria out when there was no reason, at that point, to trust Ryann with that? Why would her friends throw rocks at Alexandria? Why was this something any of them encouraged and wanted to do? How was this a valid plan? None of it made sense。 They were terrible to Alexandria a they bullied her and she was still expected to become their friend? Why in the world did Alexandria’s father let them around his child after that? Big yikes。 I was really angry by the end, though。 I was invested enough in these characters to have a really strong negative reaction to Ryann’s choice to join SCOUT, but man, was that awful or what。 You lose your parents, your (younger? He is younger, isn’t he?) brother has a baby … and you want to go to space, potentially indefinitely? What is James supposed to do on his own? Why would Ryann abandon them? Nothing in her characterization makes me believe she’d choose that so easily; she spends a good chunk of the book early on focused on James and Charlie。 I can’t imagine choosing to never see my nieces again。 It doesn’t match up with early-Ryann at all。so I’ll round up for the author’s ability to make me care about this rag-tag group of kids。 I appreciate what the author was trying to do with their trauma and I think that’s important, and I liked that they understood how they’d fucked up and they never acted that way again。 I love James。 I would read an entire book about Eferhilde and I think those transmissions were really compelling。 But overall, I’m really not sold。 A lot of potential, but falls flat。 。。。more
